Exam Preparation:
All learning materials related to exams including EC-Council official courseware and trainings are developed independently of exam content. This is because the exams are created to assess competence when using the skills and knowledge, not the effectiveness of a specific courseware or training.
EC-Council strives to make available preparation material for topics measured in an exam. However candidates are required to check the exam blueprint and objectives prior to registering for the exam.
Note: Official courseware is recommended but not mandatory for an EC-Council exam and it does not guarantee that you will pass the exam.
All EC-Council exams are required to be proctored. Proctors can either be selected by the candidate when testing through the ECC Exam Portal, or they may be supplied remotely by EC-Council via Proctor U. The proctor is a trained representative authorized by EC-Council to help administer the test and report any incidents or events recorded during the session. The proctors are governed by the proctor agreement and are committed to ensuring that the test experience is fair and valid for a test taker.
Note:
1. Taking an exam using a proctor selected by the candidate (as opposed to a proctor supplied by EC-Council via Proctor U) requires unique proctor code to enable an exam. Candidates will not be able to proceed to attempting the test without a proctor.
2. The proctor has to be able to view the exam and the candidate while the candidate is testing or else the exam result will not be valid and the test will have to be rescheduled.
3. Feedback from the proctor will be taken into consideration for all contested exam results.
When an exam update or change is proposed by the exam development department, we review the requested update to determine whether it is consistent with the goals of the program. If the proposed content is consistent with the goals of the program and the changes are in fact necessary, the exam is updated. Such changes and updates may happen from time to time to ensure the exam is current and accurate at all times. Such minor updates will not be announced.
If the proposed content includes new objectives that cover new skills or knowledge that subject-matter experts believe is necessary to demonstrate competence, a new exam blueprint/ will be released to the test takers. This may or may not lead to the release of a new exam. The exam details page is updated in this case.
EC-Council reserves the right to update content for any reason at any time to maintain the validity and relevance of our certifications.
EC- Council’s courseware and study material equip you with knowledge of concepts, tools, and techniques of the subject matter of the program and can help you prepare for the exam. Our exams are constructed to test if one actually has the necessary skills and knowledge of the subject to perform the job to which the program is related. Thus, our exams follow the job task requirements and measure job readiness. Our certification programs are designed to measure experience-based skills without bias in regard to the manner in which candidates obtain these skills.
Although EC-Council attempts to align training and exam availability, the associated training materials may or may not be revised, depending on the scope of changes introduced on the exams, and these updates may or may not align to when the updates are incorporated into the exam.
Note: EC-Council does not review study materials developed by third parties and is not responsible for their content or for ensuring that they are updated to reflect product updates. If you have questions or comments about exam preparation materials developed by third parties, please contact the publishers directly.
Yes, the exam material can include content that may not be covered in official training or courseware. EC-Council’s official courseware and training material is developed independently of exam content because the exams are intended to assess relevant skills and knowledge, not the effectiveness of training materials.
Candidates are encouraged to refer to the exam blueprints and exam objectives prior to registering for an exam.

Usage of any material including websites that publish “brain dumps” that is obtained fraudulently is considered a violation of ethics. "Brain dump" providers are in violation of EC-Council’s intellectual property rights and non-disclosure agreements. If EC-Council learns that a candidate used a “brain dump” site to prepare for an exam, this candidate will be permanently banned from taking any future EC-Council Certification exams. In addition, test scores and certifications, if applicable, may be revoked. These actions may be taken even if the candidate did not intend to defraud the EC-Council Certification Program.
If you think you have discovered a “brain dump” site with EC-Council content, please send an email message to [email protected].
Proxy testing occurs when someone takes an exam for another candidate. In other words, the candidate has passed an exam without actually taking it. Engaging in proxy testing as either the test taker or the person who hired the test taker is considered violation of ethics. If EC-Councils learns that a candidate used a proxy testing or any service of that is similar in nature for an exam, this candidate will be permanently banned from taking any future EC-Council Certification exams. In addition, test scores and certifications, if applicable, may be revoked. These actions may be taken even if the candidate did not intend to defraud the EC-Council Certification Program.
If you think you have discovered a proxy testing site that offers fraudulent services for any of EC-Council’s certification programs, please send an email message to [email protected].
Yes, we can ensure that your identity remains anonymous if requested. You can email us your feedback at [email protected]
EC-Council’s testing centres are provided with security policies and environment guidelines that must be enforced in order to acquire and maintain testing centre status. Ongoing inspections ensure that each testing centre maintains the required standards outlined by EC-Council. Similarly, EC-Council proctors are trained and authorised to take appropriate measures to help candidates should they face a technical challenge during the exam as well as stop candidates who violate testing rules. If any behavior that is not in line with the above guidelines is observed, this should be reported to us as soon as possible.
Scoring and Test Performance:
You will receive notification of your pass or fail status within a few minutes of completing your exam. In addition, you will receive a printed report that provides your exam result and feedback on your performance in the skill areas measured.
You can also find your score transcript within your Aspen account. You can write to [email protected] for assistance if needed.
After you successfully submit your exam, the points you earned on each question are totalled and then compared with the cut score to determine whether the result is pass or fail.
The score report provides an overall result to reflect pass/fail status. For some exams, a performance indicator per subject area is provided in order to help the candidate prepare to take the exam again or to improve weak areas of knowledge or skill.
This depends on the exam. Some of our exams state the exact passing score as a percentage required. Some of our exams’ passing scores are based on the knowledge and skills needed to demonstrate competence in the subject matter and the difficulty of the questions that are delivered to a candidate.
The actual cut score (the number of items you need to answer correctly) is based on input from a group of subject-matter experts who review the difficulty of the questions in relation to the expected skills of the target audience. As a result, the number of items that you have to answer correctly varies depending on the difficulty of the questions delivered when you take the exam. This ensures that regardless of which combination of items you see, the evaluation of skills is fair. If you see a more difficult set of questions, the number of correct answers needed to pass is less than if you see an easier set of questions. As a result, providing a simple percent correct wouldn't provide useful information to someone who had to take the exam multiple times and saw different combinations of questions with different levels of difficulty.
Because the number of correct answers needed to pass varies based on the difficulty of the questions delivered, if you see a difficult combination of questions, your performance may actually be higher in relation to the passing standard even though you answered fewer questions (in other words, a lower percentage) correctly than if you saw an easier set of questions. Scaled scores simplify your ability to evaluate improvements in your performance over time. This is a standard practice across the certification and licensure industry.
Each section of the exam may contain a different number of questions; therefore, the results in individual exam sections might not reflect your final exam result. In other words, there is no one-to-one relationship between the % you earned per section and your pass/fail status.
Additionally, a common misconception is that you must answer 70 percent of the questions correctly in order to pass. The actual percentage of questions that you must answer correctly varies from exam to exam and may be more or less than 70 percent, depending on the input provided by the subject-matter experts who helped us set the cut score and the difficulty of the questions delivered when you take the exam. Again, this is a standard practice across the certification and licensure industry.
The number of questions varies based on the criticality of skills measured; it is entirely possible for a candidate to answer all of the questions in a section with fewer questions incorrectly. The number of questions that measure each skill area is determined through the blueprinting process; sections of the exam measuring critical and/or more frequently performed skills will contain more questions than those that assess less important or less frequently performed skills. Thus, depending on the candidate’s areas of expertise of skills or experience in that specific area, he or she may or may not score a full 100% or 0% in a given section.
If you pass an exam, it simply means that you have demonstrated competence in the skill domain outlined by the exam blueprint. Scores of candidates who pass cannot be compared to determine whether one candidate is more skilled or knowledgeable than another. Similarly, lower scores do not mean lower levels of competence. Passing the exam means you have demonstrated competence regardless of your score and failing would mean you have not demonstrated competence.
Our exams are designed with an intention to have the total test score as a basis to make a pass/fail decision (in other words, to show whether the candidate has demonstrated the necessary skill and knowledge measured by the exam). The exams are not designed to provide feedback or compare the competency of two test- takers.
